13 Sep Welcome to the Inner Game
“What you think affects how you feel and perform. Training your brain is as important as training your body.”
Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide to Inner Excellence by Gary Mack and David Casstevens
Can athletes improve performance, productivity, and enjoyment of the game with improved mental focus? Does improving “mental muscle” – like building physical muscle – grow skill and quality of life? Studies say yes.
Parents, your athlete is in one of the busiest seasons of their young lives. You are your teenager’s most significant human relationship (despite his denial!). Your teenager needs affirmation, encouragement, and life wisdom; even more than cash and a ride to the mall. How can you help your athlete reach his or her goals?
Tips for Parents:
- Follow along on the Aspire recommended community read – Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide to Inner Excellence by Mack Casstevens. Here are some excerpts from the book…
- “Sports psychology has been called the science of success because it studies what successful people do. What we have found…. is the value of mental rehearsal and imagery.” Page 14
- “Pelé, the greatest soccer player in the world, said… enthusiasm and the mental edge are the keys to winning. Pelé described his routine, which was the same for every game he played. An hour before he stepped onto the field, Pelé went into the locker room, picked up two towels, and retreated to a private corner. Stretching out, he placed one towel under the back of his head, like a pillow. He covered his eyes with the other. Then he began to roll his mental camera. In his mind’s eye he saw himself as a youngster playing soccer on the beaches of Brazil…. He remembered how much fun he had and how much he loved the game… Pelé then hit the fast- forward button… He began recalling his greatest moments in the World Cup and reliving that winning feeling….. He began rehearsing for the upcoming game. … He saw himself dribbling through defender, heading shots, and scoring goals….” Page 15, 16
